I desire to swim in the underpass - "Yesterday the news said that the underpasses would be flooded. Today as the rain had begun to swallow the whole city I stripped down to my swim trunks and walked a kilometer to an underpass.
There a man yelled at me what I was doing as they were piling sandbags around their home. I told them not to worry, I knew what I was doing. I don't know if they could hear me over the roar of the rain, but regardless I dipped into the water and swam into the tunnel. Engulfed by the echoing rain and swelling water I swam as the water rose around me. At a point the tunnel dipped downwards slightly and I had to dive, the water was murky here, all of the skin and dirt the city sheds on a daily basis had flowed down into this one indentation.
It wasn't too bad, the water became clearer on the other end and I stopped to admire the strange sensation of floating inside a place that normally serves people on their daily commute. In this state, the underpass was something else, a stage for entertainment and recreation. It couldn't serve its normal use anymore, but nature had transformed something mundane into something exciting, interesting and most of all, challenging. Traversing isn't very interesting at all if there is no challenge. That's why hiking, swimming and mountain climbing are so interesting when compared to walking on asphalt, they engage your mind and you have to put in effort to get ahead. Efficiency isn't very fun. Though I suppose you wouldn't get much done if you had to swim and climb to your place of work, but you might find your days more fulfilling that way.
Anyway, I am wet and I want to go dry off.
